Back in 2020, our trade partner This Side Up discovered a new generation of Indonesian coffee farmers and processors producing exceptionally high quality beans in the South Sulawesi Province.
The collection of farmers in Enrekang Regency make up the Latimojong Kalosi farming group.
Over the years, these farmers have faced significant challenges while building their now successful coffee farm, but their perseverance and commitment has paid off with the unique Indonesian coffee beans we now have the privilege of roasting.
Despite conflicting interests in the region’s farming practices, the Latimojong Kalosi farmers have adopted speciality grade coffee practices, resulting in first-rate Indonesian coffee packed with vibrant citrus and red fruit flavours.
Indonesia's South Sulawesi Growing Region:
In this region of Indonesia, the primary crop grown is shallots, a plant which requires a significant amount of water and direct sunlight combined with full artificial fertilisers in order to thrive.
This type of farming drastically contradicts the cultivation of coffee (which is grown organically in shaded areas), making it difficult for both crops to co-exist.
Competing for water supply, dealing with the impact of climate change and pushing a cultural shift in farming practices are just a few of the difficulties facing Indonesian coffee farmers and processors like Latimojong Kalosi and Toduri Coffee.
And yet, despite this tumultuous farming environment and cultural and economic adversity, the quality of these Indonesian coffee beans are second to none. Enjoy!
